I need a very plain theme like MH Newsdesk or Decent which changes the banner according to where you are. For example:
    – the main page contains a site banner

    – In each post I can set something like the “featured image”. This is the one which is shown, scaled down, as the icon in the list of posts. Once the post is opened this becomes the banner.

    – Pages (like “About”) don’t need this feature. They always show the site banner.

How do I do that? I guess this is theme specific. My current favourite is “Decent”.

    [ZeroGravity]

In the mean time I have chosen the theme ZeroGravity and created a minimal child theme as described in Child Themes. Just minimal, doing nothing other than the original. I am going through the code and doing some reading. Would appreciate any guidance.

I am a newby to WordPress, have a basic idea of HTML, CSS and PHP, experienced in the Unix CLI. The site is running in my own virtual server.

    SOLVED!

The plug-in Unique Headers does exactly that!
