    REQUIRE EMAIL CONFIRMATION IS ACTIVE …

    Over the past week I’ve started seeing a LOT of fake subscriptions. The email formats are as follows. Note that the signup “names” don’t correspond either.

    Email: [first_name] [last_name] [3-5 digit random number] @ yahoo.com

    Example: [email protected]

    Then the “name” of this bot is somehow off, not coordinating with the address …

    Example:
    email = [email protected]
    name = Fred Alberts

    I don’t have JetPack installed. Moreover, I’m trying to downplay/minimize my use of plugins. I’m going avoid using the solution above and ask:

    When a user subscribes, which file from the newsletter plugin gets put into action? I want to explore the code and see if I can insist that functions.php validate it’s use. If functions.php isn’t put into action, visitors are obviously targeting the plugin directly. I’ve installed a solid honeytrap of my own which is being bypassed somehow, leading me to think they’re using direct-to-plugin urls of some kind.
