I get a mega-ton of spam and I went on vacation and wasn’t around to clean ’em up. They piled up so much that when I try to visit the moderation tab, WordPress times out try to display them all and leaves me without the ability to check any and delete.

How can I change the timeout time OR just delete all pending comments?

  • What anti-spam plugins are you using?

As I recall, Spam Karma 2 will process everything in the moderation “backlog” for you.

It was a 1.52 blog, so whatever it had.

I just upgraded to 2.0.5 hoping that’d help but it seems to just stop after 1500 comments.

If you’ve got access to phpmyadmin run the following SQL statement on your WordPress database.

    DELETE FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = ‘0’

I don’t have phpMyAdmin and I’m using Win2K3 to serve.

You can download phpmyadmin from here:

Mwdmeyer, thanks for that, but I’m not sure I have the know-how to install that correctly. Would you perhaps have an alternate suggestion?

Yeah. Install the Spam Karma 2 plugin I suggested earlier.

    1.5x didn’t have anything built-in for anti-spam.

I wrote a very quick plugin for you.

    https://www.bluetrait.com/files/wordpress-plugins/delete_comments.zip

Activate it and it will delete all un-approved and spam comments.

Please note. Each time you reload wordpress the plugin runs and deletes everything. So only leave it active until all your spam comments have been deleted.

I recommend you backup first too. Although I did just test it here without any issues (ver 2.0.5)

HandySolo – Sorry, I some didn’t see your suggestion. My bad.

Mwdmeyer – Wow, thank you for this. I’m currently running and it’s still “going,” I believe. Just gonna leave it there for a while and see if it finishes.

Yup, looks like it worked. Again, many thanks Mwdmeyer. That was truly unique and it was appreciated.
