• Okay – I have a *fun* situation (which makes me *never* want to use 1and1.com!)

I’m installing WordPress for someone using them as a host. They are currently using 1and1’s blog (which is a customized version of WordPress), but they want more capabilities (like adding plugins and such) – so they want the full version installed on their server. However, they do not want to lose the posts they already have – it’s only 3 months’ worth, but still…

Well, I am utterly amazed to discover that 1and1 has *majorly* edited and hidden things from people who host with them. I’ve never seen anything like it. I mean, really, for WordPress, all you have to do is backup your database, and everything is saved. But not these guys. I logged into phpMyAdmin so I could do the backup – but no go. The database is there, but there are no tables in it. (But there *has* to be, because the blog is there and fine – they’ve just hidden all the information!) The guy called them, and 1and1 confirmed that you can’t back up the database, and if he moves his blog, he loses everything he’s already got.

Well, I was hoping to install the “WP-Backup” plugin, because it’s not in his version, but when I FTP into his files, there’s *no* wordpress folders to be seen. NOTHING. I don’t know where they keep it, or if, again, they’ve just hidden it from view. So I thought I’d edit a plugin with the database plugin – just overwrite one that’s there. But, you guessed it – they’ve removed the “plugin editor” link. Since I know what it is, I plugged it in and got into it – but – again – they’ve made the files unwriteable so I can’t overwrite anything.

This is absolutely *ridiculous* to me. I can’t believe this. I have another option I could do – but it’s very time-consuming, and I was hoping to grasp at one last straw before I go that route.

Is it *possible* – since I have all of the login information for his server and database – could I *possibly* enter that info into my own version of the wp-database plugin, from my own site, and have *my* site remotely backup *his* database?

I don’t know if it is, but it seems that, since I have all the information to get in to it, I could possibly back it up, even if the stuff isn’t seen through the browser. I believe it’s there, they’ve just hidden it from view.

If it *is* possible, where would I need to hard-code the information so I could do this?

If it’s not, then I’ll just do my last option. Thanks for any help or suggestions ??

  • I had the same exact issue. If you are moving from 1&1 WordPress to your own WordPress
here is a solution you can try.

1 – Save the RSS feed of the site you are working with (e.g. blog.mysite.com/feed as an XML file on your desktop (e.g. feed.xml).

2 – If you are using WordPress on the new site go to Import -> Import RSS. Find the feed.xml file that you saved and hit import. That’s it. WordPress will import all the posts, etc with timestamps, tags, etc. intact.

Good to know for future reference – thank you!

I use 1and1 and the 1and1 blog feature is way too restricted, I recommend just installing WordPress on a 1and1 server.

What they do is have everything on their servers or something, not your webspace so you can’t edit anything. Same with all of their other free tools. =/

    Excellent tip, shortcutguy. Thanks!

Note that if you are exporting from a large site, before you use this export method, you should go to wp-admin’s “Options” > “Reading” page, and under “Syndication”, change “Show the most recent: [10] articles” to a number that is larger than the number of posts on your site (eg: 9999). Also, change “For each article, show: [] Full text, [x] Summary” from Summary to [x] Full text.
