8) in text on a WP Page turns into a smiley face – can O stop it?

    In one of my WP pages I have created a manual list, that is, I have put:
    1) xxxx
    2) yyy
    and so on, up to 8) items, myself, explicitly.

    For some reason when the page is displayed, the 8) turns into a little yellow smiley. Don’t see why it should do this. How can I stop it? Do I have to use the ‘ordered [or is it unordered?] list’ structure?
