• Hi,
Today every single one of my sites that I currently have active crashed. I think this is due to the fact that I have numerous 5.3 plug ins and my web host has updated their server to 5.4. This has now caused some php errors and essentially disabled all my sites to the point where I can’t even access or log-in to the the admin area?!

I have no real programming or technical knowledge and am at a loss of what to do as my web provider has said that they cannot ‘downgrade the server back to 5.3’ so this renders all my sites defunct as I have no idea how to fix it.

Any ideas of the next logical (or illogical step!) would be most appreciated! My web guy has literally disappeared off the face of the earth and I’ve been unable to contact him for about 3 weeks (the 2 incidents are not related!!)

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Kind regards,

    Paul

  • Greetings, Paul

I’m inferring from your post these are likely business sites, and not personal/hobby sites. Correct?

Depending on the number of sites involved and the urgency/time sensitive nature of getting them repaired, you might consider hiring professional assistance.

    …or illogical step!

Find a host with 5.3. I tried 5.4 for about five minutes a few weeks ago. and yes, there is trouble ahead. However, my host lets me choose, and one site where I help is still using 5.2.

my web provider has said that they cannot ‘downgrade the server back to 5.3’

If they no longer offer 5.3, then ask them what you need to do to update your sites php configuration for use with php 5.4

Often it can be something as simple as just adding the handler to your .htaccess file. Example: AddType application/x-httpd-php54 .php – or something along those lines…

Any ideas of the next logical.. (step)

Yes. Contact your hosts support team and ask them what you need to do to enable php 5.4 for your sites.

[edit] if you are able to confidently rule out any php configuration issues, and if by chance you are using an identical plugin or theme on all of the affected sites, there are some troubleshooting steps that might help you identify those issues. I would probably start with the Disable Plugins and Deactivate Theme sections.
