Suddenly my TinyMCE editor stopped loading. I hadn’t added any plugins or anything. So, I disabled all my plugins and tried again. Still broken. Looking in the console, I found this error message:

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 522 (Origin Connection Time-out)

The file it’s referring to is:

    /wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wpemoji/plugin.min.js?wp-mce-4208-20151113

Any idea what could be going on? Happens on all devices. No idea what “wpemoji” even is.

In case anyone ever runs across this: I learned that it was a Cloudflare-specific error. (Cloudflare is my CDN.)

Apparently Cloudflare had (obviously) accessed my VPS too frequently, and my host had blocked a few of its IP addresses. That’s it. Several days of troubleshooting (and one client) later, my host finally admitted to the problem and whitelisted the IP addresses.

    Problem solved!

Thanks mate, I had a very similar issue, you post helped me isolate the problem to Cloudflare. I had to create a Page Rule for the back-end in the Cloudflare settings.
