Logging in to the site today, we noticed that our Woo order ID numbers were now 6-digits instead of 4, like previously.

    Example (newest at top):
    #508104
    #508101
    #508098
    #8088
    #8068
    #8064

I’ve done some research and understand that the order numbers are generated based on post ID’s in the wp_posts table. So small jumps of 5-20 are normal and expected. However, a jump of 50,000 seems like an issue.

I checked the wp_posts table in the database and the ID’s are sequential until there is a jump directly from ID #8091 to #508092. So I’m trying to understand what could have caused that massive increase.

Curiously enough, I looked at the wp_users table and similarly, the user ID’s jumped up by 1000. So, from ID #446 to #1447.

I did make some edits to pages yesterday but did not touch the WooCommerce settings or update any plugins.
Any ideas what could have caused this? Thx

    Hi @joelp24,

I did make some edits to pages yesterday but did not touch the WooCommerce settings or update any plugins.

To see if there’s a connection, could you kindly share more info about these changes? Perhaps, did the changes touch on post IDs?

Just to add, some plugins that offer the functionality of ordering posts/orders sequentially can cause such modifications in the numbers. To get a better view of your setup, is it possible to share with us your System Status from WooCommerce → Status?

    Thanks.

Update – This issue seems to be related to our web hosts staging environment. I created a new staging instance and then checked the WP tables and the wp_posts ID had jumped another 500,000.

Our newest order is #1008157. Two days ago we were on #8088.

I explained the issue with the hosting support rep and they insist that this is a plugin issue. I don’t understand how that can be the problem. Is that possible?

    Hi @joelp24 ??

Thank you very much for the update!

It’s very unlikely being caused by WooCommerce, but my guess is that there is some connection between the database used on your sites which is causing the order numbers to jump.

I tested this out on my end by creating a new staging site and then making an order on my main site but was unable to replicate the behaviour – the order numbers are unaffected. My recommendation would be that you try a plugin like WP Staging to create a Staging Site to see if it does the same or not.

    Thanks!

Resolved: After more testing and chatting with hosting support (WPX.net), they finally confirmed the issue was with their staging site creation process.
