503 Errors and Uncertain Issues

Hi!

Can you please take a look at your server’s error log and let me know what’s in there, when a 503 error is triggered? I need a few more clues to understand what’s amiss :-S

The errors are various coming one by one and affecting other things due to the plugin.
If plugin is enabled, it shows 503 error or the website doesn’t even open (JUST THE HOMEPAGE)

Our blog has already allocated with a high memory

We have the same problem on our news site. The plugin does not work on our website the last day. When I activate the plugin, I am receiving “500 Internal Server Error” in my WordPress. :-S

I guess the issue appears because autoloading the first image that appears in the post as the featured image is not very effective. If you manually set your external featured images and want to keep using the plugin, try to add the following in your theme’s functions.php file:

add_filter( 'nelioefi_use_first_image', '__return_false' );

This will deactivate the autoloading feature and, if my guess is right, the issue should be gone. Please let me know if it helped!

Yes, I tried. That filter is super straight forward: it simply tells the plugin not to (a) look for and (b) use the first image that appears in the post content as your featured image.

Looking for the first image of a post is quite demanding (we must retrieve the post content, run a regular expression on it, and extract the image—if any). I assume that all this workload is generating your 500 server errors, but I don’t know for sure.

I uploaded a new version of the plugin that will reduce this workload by looking for the first image only once (we now save it in a post meta). That takes a little bit more space in your database, but saves a lot of processing time.

How can I know? My development installation is not throwing any errors. If I can’t reproduce the issue locally, I can’t know if the solution I propose solves it. And the thing is: we don’t know why you’re getting this issue (even though, I insist, my guess is it’s related to the feat. image auto-setting).

The reason to ask for help in the support that the author test the thing and let us know it works fine.

I’m sure you know I’m helping as much as I can. But there are some things that are out of my reach, and these include simulating your environment to reproduce your exact same issue and fixing it.

I never asked you to test in your live website. Simply deploy a staging environment (there’s plenty of hosting providers that let you do that with just on click) and “test” my solution there. If you don’t have a staging environment, then I’m afraid you’ll have to test it in your live site. Should you have to test anything on your live site, test it when there’s less traffic (night? weekend?).

Again, I hope that the filter I shared in my last reply helps you. Once you’ve been able to test it whenever you can, let us know if it did help.

Also could you add a features which could help us add the support for the plugin for all themes, everything we change themes, we have to modify the theme source to utilize the nelio featured image as the source.

I plan to improve NelioEFI in the future and, hopefully, one day it will no longer be necessary to tweak themes. But this is still work in progress and needs a lot of thinking.

As per your request, it’d be really great. But I’m afraid that, if one has to tweak its theme to make it compatible with the plugin, there’s nothing we can do from the plugin’s perspective. There’s only one exception to that: when the theme offers its own hooks. In that case, I usually recommend adding the filter function in the theme’s functions.php file.
