    Hi there,

We’re receiving message people (from different ip’s) can’t login to the site, and get a 503-error: Your access to this site has been temporarily limited by the site owner’
    (I can login myself.)
We’re using Wordfence on all of our sites, and this site is the only one with this issue.

Any idea how to fix this?

    Regards, Ed’

    Hi @eddiebouncer,

I’m having a server error with the URL provided so I can’t check whether I would receive the same error as your other site visitors, but there could be an issue with a number of things.

It is possible if the volume of logins is high on your site, that simple mistypings of usernames result in blocks when Wordfence > All Options > Brute Force Protection > Immediately lock out invalid usernames is turned on. It’s recommended to have this off for sites with a large number of users.

Alternatively, you could have an allowlisted IP, but IP detection on this site is incorrect. For example, detecting your server’s IP as a visitor IP would result in everybody being blocked when one user violates a rule. To double-check your IP detection is correct, first, check the following site and take note of your IP – (note that this detection can sometimes not be 100% accurate on cellular phone network connections): https://www.whatsmyip.org.

Then, head over to your site and go to Wordfence > All Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs and reference the area under that section that says Detected IPs and Your IP with this setting. Start from the top and check to see if any of the settings show that both of those show the same IP as the site above does.

If you’re using Cloudflare, you will most likely need to select “Use the Cloudflare “CF-Connecting-IP” HTTP header to get a visitor IP. Only use if you’re using Cloudflare.”.

Let me know if either of those approaches help!

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Hi there, @wfpeter

Sorry for the mistyped URL (it doesn’t need the dash..). But i’ve tackled the issue. Users would log in with their e-mailadress instead of their username. Tbh i overlooked this as this didn’t even come to mind at first.
    – For visitors your suggestion is a nice addition.
    – Whitelist IP is not too relevant as many people work from home etc, which yields in a lot of IP’s.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
