Hello, I am currently getting this 500 WSOD error:

PHP Fatal error: Array and string offset access syntax with curly braces is no longer supported in /home/timefory/public_html/index.php on line 4

I have read somewhere that it is related to the Wordfence plugin but now I can’t find where I read that. I’ve lost my day sifting through documentation to try to fix this.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

I am somewhat new to WP files and would like to know how to fix this please.
Website is currently in maintenance mode.

Hi @jupiter007, thanks for getting in touch!

We have seen this error in the past, but it was specifically related to a Wordfence script and was fixed in a subsequent plugin update.

This one just points to your index.php rather than a file in the Wordfence plugin directory so could be something directly there on line 4, or more likely a script included on line 4.

To troubleshoot, you could try disabling your plugins and reenabling them one-by-one until the error returns and also try returning your theme to a default like Twenty Twenty-One to see if your theme might be the cause. If it’s an issue with a third party plugin or theme, it could be worth contacting the provider to see if they could rectify it. Likewise, if it only presents when Wordfence is the only active plugin on the default theme, then get back to me and we’ll look further into it.

Let me know how you get on,

    Peter.
