My site used to work fine, then one day it didn’t. All of the files appear to be intact, but I get a 500 Internal Server Error when trying to access the site, or the wp-admin login.

How do I troubleshoot WordPress when I can’t even log in?

The site is hosted on GoDaddy, URL is https://www.devkhan.com/wp. I had to revert to the old site until I can get this resolved. I really feel like it’s a setting or something on GoDaddy’s side, but I don’t know what to look for.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Hi :),

Kindly check the error logs with your hosting provider. The 500 error normally occurs due to incorrect code in .htaccess.
Please check your .htaccess and use default wordpress permalink .htaccess code if you are unsure of anything in the current .htaccess.

rename plugin folder for wordpress installed in wp folder. check in .htaccess for what code is in there.

if these steps dont do any help, check apache logs.

Thanks for your help, Dan & laliz. While trying to walk through the steps you advised, I discovered to my horror that I’ve been running on a Windows server all this time. Using GoDaddy’s support pages, I tracked it down to the web.config file, which I had never touched. Fixed it and I’m up and running. Thanks again!!!
