Have you asked your host about those errors? I have never seen them before, but this looks more like a server configuration issue. What host are you on?

Thanks for the fast reply. I’m being bounced around between my webhost (nexcess.net wordpress hosting plan) and my programmers.

Here’s some of their replies …

    PROGRAMMER
Error 500 sometimes are temporary issues. This types of error are server side so you could contact your server for support for this issue.

    PROGRAMMER 2
500 Internal Server Errors indicate that something has gone wrong on the web site’s server. Only your web host can diagnose and fix the problem by looking at their server logs.

    NEXCESS
Sorry for the delay in getting back with you. Unfortunately, I’m unfamiliar with the WordPress extension WP Store Locator. If you’d like to use the extension, I would suggest touching base with the developers of the extension to see why it would trigger the FastCGI errors. Let us know if you’d like us to try disabling the extension or if you have any other questions or concerns.

The response from your host was to be expected, blame the extension without even checking out why the error occurred in the first place ( as also suggested by your programmers ).

I’m no sysadmin, but from the searching I have done most of the time the error you see seems to be caused by a misconfiguration on the server. Although it’s interesting that it only happens with my plugin.

You get it 100% of the time on the dashboard when the store locator is enabled? What other plugins have you enabled? Have you tried to disable every other plugin except mine and see if it still happens? Any caching plugins that you are running?

There are a few potential solutions in this answer, but they all involve changing server settings https://stackoverflow.com/a/19236559/1065294

    Thanks Tijmen,

Sorry for the delay – my laptop broke just before I flew out on vacation!

I’m still unable to resolve this and to answer your questions:

    – Yes 100% of the time when SL is enabled.
    – I have a lot of other plugins however the error is only showing when SL is activated.
    – I’m using W3 Total cache. The problem persists even hen this is disabled.

I’ll contact you privately to see if we can troubleshoot this which I hope is OK.

    Thanks,

For the record Tijmen sent me an alternative system file which fixed the #500 error.

Very fast response and I’m delighted things are working 100% again.
