    Hello!

I have a problem that makes no sense and which I can’t seem to solve. I would really appreciate a fix!

I set up wordpress to be in a different directory than my blog, so that the WP files wouldn’t clutter my root. I also need pretty permalinks (%category%/%post-name%) for easy client linking.

The funny thing is, when I have both of those together (the permalinks and the different directories), I get a 500 error when I try to access my posts. If I use the default permalink, then the post works. And when I set up the blog in the same directory than WP, the posts work too. It’s the combination of both that screws it up.

I tried dumping the htaccess file but that didn’t work.

    Anybody’s got a suggestion?

    Million thanks!

  • Start by resetting your custom permalinks to the default setting. Then have a read of Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory to ensure that you’ve got WP configured and running correctly.

Well, I suppose it’s running correctly since it works just great as soon as my permalinks are back to the default setting.

What I don’t understand about those instructions is that they seem to be for people who want to CHANGE the directory wordpress is in; I installed it in its “wp” folder originally, and then changed the address setting for the blog in “general”. I don’t see what else I’m supposed to do.

And again, when the permalinks are set to default, the blog works just fine.

I think it’s a bug. I see a lot of people on this forum having the same problem, and nobody’s got a fix…

No – it’s not bug. Try re-reading that page again.

Many people want WordPress to power their site’s root (e.g. https://example.com) but they don’t want all of the WordPress files cluttering up their root directory.

    You said:

See the similarity? Just changing the blog url is not the way to go – as you’ve since discovered.

I get it – thank you for insisting on this; I hadn’t edited the “index.php” file, and for some reason that only created problems when I had permalinks on. It now works great, and I’m really grateful for the end to this headache –

    many many thanks!
