• I just started getting 500 errors on numerous sites across 4 of our servers, I cant find the common thread that is causing the error. I tracked the problem to the wflogs in the uploads folder, I deleted it so it could recreate itself and it fixed the issue.

I am not sure if anyone else is dealing with this, but if they are, this did the trick.

Yes I have the same problem. had to disable Wordfence: Error log:

    Thanks

My client informed me their website was down today, “white screen of death.” I saw through FileZilla that the wordfence plugin was updated on 4 Dec. I didn’t manually update it. I stopped having all plugins automatically updated because of this 500 error happening more often lately as a result of updates. I renamed the wordfence plugin to old and now the site is back up. Looks like the latest update is crashing websites.

    Reporting similar issue.
    500 error:
    This was the error log:

PHP Warning: require_once(wfHelperBin.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/******/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/lib/wordfenceClass.php on line 23

It appeared to be calling up wfHelperBin.php which I could not find manually?
Solution? Deleted the wordfence plugin files on the server.
I tried to do a fresh download with the website back up, but when I tried to activate the wordfence plugin it reported that activation failed as a fatal error was produced.
I would like to reinstall Wordfence. This was version 7.1.18.

We recently have seen reports of updates breaking on some of the sites hosted on GoDaddy and a few other hosting providers.

The issue for GoDaddy users appears to be that they use a networked file system that can be extremely slow under load, though usually due to activity from other sites using the same file system. GoDaddy cPanel accounts are similarly limited in file transfer, but these limits are artificially imposed to prevent the site from impacting other accounts.
The update process involves removing old files, unzipping the new plugin, and then copying over the new files to the plugin location. On some hosts, that process can exceed the max_execution time or even the gateway timeout. It’s usually during the last part of the transfer when the new files are copied that issues can occur.
If the file transfer dies when the files are halfway through being copied you can see some very odd effects, but what usually happens is the update fails.
Additionally, if the WAF has been optimized prior to a failed update, this can cause the site to display a 500 error.
We are currently working towards optimizing both the size of the plugin and the number of files it contains, which should speed up both the unzip process and the copying process, as well as the removal process for the next update.
General resource limitations put in place by the hosting company, such as CPU or memory usage limitations, could also be the problem for some hosts, but fewer files in the plugin should help with that as well.

This might not fix every case, since if the file system or other resources are under high usage, updates are likely going to fail no matter what plugin is being updated. Still, we are trying everything we can to ensure updates work, even under circumstances we can’t control.
We are hopeful that, between the current release and the next few updates, the improvements we are working on will address the majority of cases.

A fresh download of 7.1.18 was successful a couple of days ago and I now have it running perfectly on my site. I have notified my host of this post in case they can adjust timeout interval to avoid instances of this happening.
    Thanks.

    Hello,

One site have strange error messages:

We have a 500 error after the last WP update. Do you have a suggestion to help me to
repair or put online again this web site please?

To repair mine I had to delete the Wordfence folder from the plugins in the file manager.
Then reinstall a fresh copy of Wordfence using the WordPress dashboard – plugins.
    I hope that helps.

jhnplfry thank you, but I’ve no access to the WP dashboard. I can only work from the cPanel file manager. Do you have another idea for me, please?

sylvie, Have you deleted the wordfence plugin from the plugins in cpanel file manager?
When I did that it brought my website back on line and I was able to use WP dashboard. If deleting the wordfence plugin has not worked for you, I don’t know how else to help.
