    Hello

We have a WordPress installation at Denver Public Schools that runs our main public website, https://www.dpsk12.org. We have been running mult-site since 2016 with various departments having their own sub-site.

I am trying to upgrade our non-production site to 5.4.1 in preparation for upgrading production. Core updated fine, but when I went to upgrade network databases I ran into an error after a number of sites had processed –

‘Warning! Problem updating . Your server may not be able to connect to sites running on it. Error message: A valid URL was not provided.’

I found a sub-site that had a misspelling in it’s siteurl and home wp_[siteid]_options and I fixed that. But the error continued. I actually worked through a number of small inconsistencies ( http vs https in the site url…) and re-ran database upgrade a number of times. At this point all of the sub sites report the new db_version for their site, but the dashboard still says it needs a database upgrade and that upgrade still fails with the ‘valid url not provided’ error. Turning on debugging gives me no further information.

    Any help appreciated.

The problem was with a site that had such a big field in wp_[site_id]_options that the entire table was truncated, probably due to a mysql timeout. We move sites around via mysql export and import and this one had been malfunctioning for a while. Dropped that site and network upgrade ran to completion.

That said, the typical problems can be solved by verifying site connectivity and looking at subcomponents (dns works. siteurl, home and domain all in congruence. no redirects on web server affecting site).

    regards,
    Scott
