• On several sites I’m seeing: “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.”

    Re-attempting the update does nothing.

    Have you tried manually updating using these steps?

    Edit: Before doing that please make sure that you have both a file and database backup of your site as a safety precaution.

    Yes, manually updating is fine.

    Using the automatic update is failing with many installs though, and leaving behind .maintenance in root. That turned out to be the issue in this case.

    Updating themes / premium plugins with 5.2 installed is also failing at the maintenance mode stage, I wonder if the issues are related …

    That sounds like a specific problem to that premium plugins. Which ones? If a premium plugin has an issue then they made need to fix it there and that plugin may be added to the WordPress 5.2 master list.
