After the auto update to 5.2.3 at midnight last night, I’ve had 2 clients call me to say they have been contacted by people trying to sign up to the their sites whom say they get the email telling them their account is ready but, when they try to login, nothing happens and, when I login to wp-admin to investigate, there is no record of them even signing up.

Both are woocommerce ecommerce sites so, I suspect I’ll simply be told to contact woocommerce and tell them wp core broke their sign system again and they have to catch up to last nights security patches before these sites will work again?

    Cheers.

  • Okay, I’m gonna tell you what you expected to hear. And I’m going to point out that WooCommerce might need to be informed of this problem anyway to help them help their users and possibly to work with the core team to come to a resolution and possibly help everyone down the line and in the future possibly.

I will point out that this doesn’t seem to be breaking your or your client’s WordPress or WooCommerce itself but a segment of your WooCommerce dealing with registration which could even be a plugin or theme issue for that matter.

You didn’t provide a link so I can’t even look at the site(s) involved to see if there is anything I might be able to help you fix. There could be a thousand reasons this problem cropped up on your client’s sites.

Thanks @jnashhawkins I’ve already posted there.

It turns out that it’s a cache issue. Both sites also use W3Cache with Couldflare for page cache, DNS and DDOS mitigation.

I cleared both cache systems and new registrations are working again.

It would be nice if WP Core would notify before pushing out these auto-security updates.

I always clear the cache after doing updates and, could have prevented these sites from falling on their faces if I knew when to expect the auto update, so I could schedule the caches to be cleared.

    Cheers.

@developercanada I’m surprised W3 didn’t deal with the cache discrepancy itself and pass thru the expiry to Cloudflare also.

That’s one of the reasons I recommend a cache with Cloudflare (or a Nginx box, etc.).

One question for you if you don’t mind… are those two affected clients running that Cloudflare plugin?

If yes and you have time would you let the Cloudflare people know the details in case they don’t see this?
