The exact same thing happened when I attempted the 4.1.2 update.

I managed to restore the latest backup, but now I’m stuck in an endless Database update required loop.

    Please Help!

compactdrums.com. Site is up, but I can’t get to admin. If I perform the database update the site is messed up, but I can get to admin.

  • I too am having this exact issue and also I migrated FROM 1and1 to TSOhost but the problem seems to have migrated too. I am locked at version 4.1.1 and any upgrade trashes the content and media into posts.

If I can find anything out, i will let you know, this is most intriguing and frustrating.

@compactdrums: What gofe says is correct. I asked someone I know who could fix it. She fixed the value db_version in wp_options and the rest that gofe have well listed. Please try again. Also sorry for the troubles that I have caused.

Gofe, Yes I am sure, but I will try again just to rule it out

Dave, Yes please and of course I will do the same

Marko, You haven’t caused any troubles. Thanks for your input

@compactdrums; no need to try again, your site should be fixed now. Just try again the upgrade to 4.1.2/4.2

@compactdrums: I have, I was the person who made the mistake in the first place ??

@davek0974: just try what I’ve listed above:

    1. restore your latest backup of 4.1.1.

    2. in your database, check table wp_options and option_name “db_version”. Make sure you set the db_version to 30133.

    3. check if in wp-includes/version.php there is $wp_db_version = 30133. If not, add it.

Gofe… ???? And what do I do if it doesn’t work again?

Gofe, are you sure? I have restored a backup since F. Z. reverted the site to 4.1.1

@gofe the db option table shows “initial version = 30133” but my version.php file does not have that line in it, I will add it and try later to upgrade, thanks

    @davek0974: please pay attention, i was not talking about initial_db_version = 30133, i was talking about db_version.

@compactdrums: In case it will go wrong again, you still have your backup of 4.1.1 and you can revert back.(and will see what are the options in this case)
But first give it a try, it should work. I also tried on one of my installations and it worked.
Just, again, make sure that before upgrading, in the database you have db_version set to 30133 and the file version.php contains $wp_db_version = 30133

    Okidox, checked version.php, checked db… Here goes…

I also cleaned up the posts and got rid of all the revisons just in case since a big posts file seems to be able to cause issues too…..

    Fingers crossed…

YES!!! It seems to have worked… I’m on 4.2!

Dave, Listen to Gofe. Seems he knows what he’s talking about.

The only additional thing I did was empty all the revisions as my posts table was 2000+ rows.

    Thanks a bunch Gofe!
Marko, I’ll send you a bill for all my time.. ?? (joke)

Glad to hear that! Enjoy 4.2 ??
