Hi, I’ve found a solution to my issue, so this is for information as well as asking why this happens.

I’m using Win XP & CPanel hosting. I downloaded 3.0 from WP Downloads, extracted & uploaded into new folder & DB. When I’d logged into the dashboard, nothing really worked as it should, the arrow heads on the left hand menu items didn’t work & when I went to add content to a new page, the Editor only showed the Media icons & no text showed up when I typed, unless I highlighted it.

Thinking I’d messed up the install, I went to Updates & Re-installed Automatically but that didn’t help.

Next step was Google & I found this: https://www.techiecorner.com/1656/wordpress-visual-editor-not-working/

To fix WordPress visual editor not showing, follow the steps below:-

    * FTP to your web server

    * Download your wp-config.php and add this line of code at the bottom of the file before the “require_once” line.

    define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false );

(*remember to backup the original wp-config.php)

    * Once done, upload the wp-config.php to your web server again. Now refresh your wordpress page and you should see the Visual Editor now.

I added the code & the dashboard worked perfectly.

As an experiment, I then downloaded a fresh copy of WP 3.0 from WordPress Downloads & created two more manual installs. They also required both the additional line of code above & to have WP 3.0 Re-installed Automatically before they worked properly.

I then downloaded the WP 3.0 zip file from within my sites Dashboard – Update location.

I then tried two more installs using this new file & they both worked perfectly straight away, without adding the additional code or running Re-installed Automatically.

Is there a difference between the two files?

    Thanks, Mark

  • DG329, you have ended hours of misery. I have searched diligently and tried many fixes, but did not find that techiecorner fix, which is exactly what I required. I can’t help answer your question but can say this is my installation experience. I used the WordPress Automatic Backup plugin to install 3.0. No editor. I downloaded a fresh copy of 3.0 from WordPress and using ftp I re-installed wp-admin and wp-includes. I tried many, many other fixes, but since you are particularly interested in the installation variables, that’s enough on that. I can’t thank you enough for posting this information.

    Tried that, too. Still nothing.

Wow, you are amazing for posting this. I think that this fix should be posted, stickied somewhere. There are SOOOOO many people with this issue, and the threads are scattered endlessly around these forums. The issue affects so many page elements it’s crazy.

First attempt at this messed up. I have no idea what was going on, but editing this file in Dreamweaver completely screwed up the file. It added odd characters at the end of the file. Backup your original!

Next I used wordpad to edit the file. None of the strange characters were added after the last “;” in this file when done this way. I pasted the code as suggest here. Uploaded, then bingo. It now works as it should.

    Holy Moly!
    The Techiecorner fix has fixed:
    The Visual Editor problem,
Issues with the Screen Options and Help buttons not working,
QuickPress, WordPress Blog etc on the Dashboard menu.

all on a 3.0.1 installation of WordPress
    This is awesome.

Thanks DG329 for recommending the fix, and describing how to do it.
