    I have been searching for a while now to sort out my 404 problems and came across the suggestion to use google webmaster tools. When I signed in it said please add your site, so not recognising that my site exists. Can anyone shed some light on this. This is not due to WordPress update problem because I had it before the 4.2 update.

    Are you saying that you used to have your site in Google Webmaster Tools, but now it’s not there?

    If so, perhaps you added it under a different Google account?

    If not, just follow the prompts there to add your site.

    The webmaster tools is resolved and its confirming that I have 12 404 errors.

    I have searched the forum for answers on how to resolve the problem but can’t find anything that works.

    Click on the URL it’s giving you the 404 for. That should open a pop-up with more info. In that pop-up is a tab where you can see a list of the URLs containing the broken link.

    Then it’s just a matter of editing those posts/pages/comments/widgets/whatever they are to fix the link.

    Do you mean in the webmaster tools? There’s nothing to click there. I watched a video earlier showing diagnostics in the menu and I can’t find that.

    I know what posts are producing 404’s to be honest its most of them.

    In Webmaster Tools, choose your site, then go to Crawl -> Crawl Errors.

    Under the Not Found tab, you should see a list of pages with errors.

    Clicking the URL there will open a pop-up with two tabs, “Error Details” and “Linked From”. In the Linked From, you will find which things to edit to fix the URL.

    If you can’t find any of that, you’ll need to post over at https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/webmasters for assistance.

    Ok did that and it says:

    Googlebot couldn’t access the contents of this URL because the server had an internal error when trying to process the request. These errors tend to be with the server itself, not with the request.

    So does that mean I need to contact my Godaddy and get them to sort it?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

    Then that’s not a 404 error.

    What is the URL it couldn’t access?

    This is weird, some how one of my affiliate links has been tagged on the end of one of my blog posts. This is not a link to a post on my website anyway. Which is https://www.healthytreefrog.com

    Thread Starter karenw10

    (@karenw10)

    That was under the heading of errors. I clicked the tag soft 404 and when I click the link it says page does not exist.

    Googlebot couldn’t crawl this URL because it points to a non-existent page. Generally, 404s don’t harm your site’s performance in search, but you can use them to help improve the user experience.

    Is there a “Linked From” tab in the same pop-up with the Error Details? What are some the Linked From URLs?

    Also, are you using a plugin to mange your affiliate links?

    Thread Starter karenw10

    (@karenw10)

    Linked from

    https://www.healthytreefrog.com/turmeric-better-at-stemming-the-cancer-cells/

    No plugins for affiliate. But the link above is the very first post that I started to add my affiliate link. All this trouble occurred yesterday after I completed another post with the same affiliate.

    Should I go and strip out the links to see if that helps?

    Thread Starter karenw10

    (@karenw10)

    There are 2 server errors both linked to the above link. Both returning a response code 500.

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

    That’s a bit hard to test, as every post on your site is returning a 404 right now.

    Try re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

    Thread Starter karenw10

    (@karenw10)

    I have already done the saving permalinks James, have studied a lot on here about the subject.

    I renamed my .htaccess file temporarily to see what effect that would have. I also found another thread which gave a debug code for the wpcontent.php. have sorted most of that by deleting plugins but can you tell me what this means?

    Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cache limiter – headers already sent (output started at

    /home/myblog151/public_html/wp-content/advanced-cache.php:10) in /home/myblog151/public_html/wp-content/themes/gadgetine-

    theme/functions/filters.php on line 5

    The code from line 1 – 5 is:
    <?php
    global $post;
    function register_my_session() {
    if(!session_id()){
    session_start();

    Do you know what this warning is saying?

    Hi James, I have temporarily solved the problem. All the pages are working but will only work on default permalink.
