404 problem on multisite

Among others I run and host the site https://skolebridge.dk.
We would like to provide multilingual support and this is the first attempt. The original site is in danish and I activated both danish and english en_gb. The post/page-editor behaved as expected so I was stumped to find that the site suddenly went haywire. More precisely the main page is now routed from https://skolebridge.dk to https://skolebridge.dk/da_DK/ which makes sense but WordPress doesn’t grant that request:
<404 Not Found>
https://skolebridge.dk/da_DK/
Not FoundThe requested URL /da_DK/ was not found on this server.
Did I do anything wrong? I did nothing except activating multilanguage.
