404 page not found after just a few modifications

After just beginning to make edits to design and layout, I get a 404 page not found at my home page (when attempting to view site). I’ve installed and reinstalled to try to take the steps one at a time to see what could possibly be giving me this message. In order I change:
-header image-no problem
-make all wordpress links invisible-no problem
-begin adding my own links-and get the 404 page not found

I’ve deleted all my links and still get the 404 page not found (when trying to view site)
