I’ve recently had a problem pointed out to me whereby if you try to access a URL pointed via this plugin, a 404 error is encountered if the trailing slash is omitted in the address bar.

While this isn’t a problem for links within the site itself which are always done correctly, any vanity URLs we set up for use in printed adverts have the risk of users failing to include the trailing slash and the link not working, eg:

https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/CHISummerStonor
vs
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/CHISummerStonor/

https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/henley-on-thames
vs
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/henley-on-thames/

I’ve tried force appending a trailing slash via .htaccess but this doesn’t resolve the issue. Is anyone else having the same problem?

when i access these urls, i see redirections in both cases:
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/CHISummerStonor -> https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/events/craft-shows/CHISummerStonor/

https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/CHISummerStonor/ -> https://ticketsales.ichf.co.uk/products/henley-country-craft-show-autumn-2018

please post a screenshot of your configuration and describe what you would like to achieve with the plugin ??

The point I’m trying to make is that both
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/CHISummerStonor
and
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/CHISummerStonor/

should map to the same page –
https://www.ichfevents.co.uk/events/craft-shows/CHISummerStonor
(which in this case then uses the Page Links To plugin to forward users to https://ticketsales.ichf.co.uk/products/henley-country-craft-show-autumn-2018 )

And that
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/henley-on-thames
and
https://www.thecraftshows.co.uk/henley-on-thames/
should also both map to the same page, in this case
https://www.ichfevents.co.uk/events/craft-shows/henley-on-thames/
as per the mappings you’ll see in the screenshot below.

The point is that if the trailing slash is omitted, WordPress doesn’t find the page that the link should be mapped to. This seems like strange behaviour. With the trailing slash included, it maps as one would expect. Surely with or without the trailing slash it should map as intended?

At first I wondered if it was a problem about using it in conjuntion with Page Links To, but as you can see it happens even without that as the 2nd set of URLs above should map to the same page. You can see the mappings below:

I hope that makes more sense! Sorry if I’m not explaining clearly enough.

hy,

your configuration looks good and i understand your mappings now ??
i double-checked it on another installation and it does deal with the trailing slash correctly usually.

i would advise you to set up another fresh wordpress instance on the same server just for testing. point some subdomains to it and see how it behaves there. that is the easiest way to see if any other plugins disturb it or if it may be some server configuration.
