This is a bit embarrassing! This is not my first time setting up a wordpress site, by a long shot! It is the first time I ever set one up on Rackspace though. Anyway, the site works just fine with the default permalinks. Any change, either the suggested or a custom, returns a 404 error on any page that I try and view. I can login to the admin and when I switch the permalinks back to default, all works. My .htaccess file exists and is writable by WordPress. I also have all the necessary configurations in the httpd.conf file on my server root. (Options FollowSymlinks and Allow Override All ) My ultimate goal is installing BuddyPress…so the permalinks can’t be default. I get these results both with Buddypress installed and also with it removed.

Sorry, I am unable to link to the site on the forum.

try reading this codex guide before setting a custom permalink structure again.:

Thanks for the suggestion, but like I said in my message, I’ve been doing this for a long time. ?? It ended up being a strange issue with my Apache setup at RackSpace. I spent an obscenely long time with a customer support rep (btw I have ran two companies servers on RackSpace now and I will never leave them…their support is above and beyond top notch) We tried nearly everything under the sun. My config files were all perfect. We rewrote and restarted…again and again. Nothing seemed to do the trick. The next day I decided to ignore the .htaccess file and place the rewrite directly into the httpd.conf file. That did it. It was strange, ’cause everything was set up properly to use .htaccess. Anyway, I am just happy that all is working!!
