All the Comments links are now leading to a 404 error page. They were fine earlier today. Any idea why this is happening and how I can get it fixed?

  • your next post was going to be something like “anyone???”

I wonder if you read back your own post here, you’ll think there’s enough information to diagnose anything whatsoever.

How about a link to your blog, since the site in your profile isn’t the one with the issue….

For the record, I dug it up at https://ware-abouts.mickware.info/ … and your problem seems to be your permalinks. All links (not just comment links) are broken.

Either your server doesn’t support mod-rewrite, or your htaccess is broken. Disable the pretty permalinks for testing.

oh and by the way, they usually tell reporters to follow their nose, but if Michael Ware did that, he’d be chasing his tail ??

Thanks for your above-and-beyond effort, Ivovic. I was really hoping this was a common enough error that everyone would say, “Oh yeah, it’s just…”

I have no idea how to disable the permalinks — it is set for the name-and-date option, is another one better? My server is 1&1, which supports WP exclusively, although it is a couple updates behind, apparently. And as to my broken htaccess… do I need to see a doctor for that?!

Seriously, nothing was changed by me, so I don’t *think* that anything I did caused this. I posted an entry yesterday, approved a comment later, all was fine. A few hours later I start getting email that no one can get to the comments. Who do I talk to? 1&1? Or WP?

***I just realized that something did change… it went to a 2nd page. There had been no “Previous entries” link at the bottom of the page. Did that do it? It would definitely seem to be the permalink issue, but how do I disable those?

And Michael earned that nose the hard way: playing rugby! Says he lost count as to how many times it was broken… 10, 11, something like that…

it is possible that your host has killed mod-rewrite for some odd reason… perhaps restarting the server may make things right again…

in the mean time, setting permalinks to DEFAULT, under options/permalinks should resolve the problem by the looks of things.

its not a wp issue by the looks of it, so chatting to your host seems like the next step… make sure to mention mod-rewrite, if indeed what I’ve suggested here does enable the links again.

ps: that’s a serious case of using your head when playing!… gotta respect a guy who doesn’t hesitate, though ??

btw, I just read over my first post, and I was more than a little sarky, I apologise.

as a rule of thumb though, more detail is better than none at all… having something to look at encourages people to go looking, I guess… and you’re more likely to get an answer.

    Cheers ??

It’s cool, I deserved the sark. I just am (clearly) in over my head… But thanks for the apology. Classy.

I could live with the Ugly links, but I am not offered a Default option on the Permalink page, just the “date and name,” “numeric,” and “custom.” I can see in the WP instructions that Default should be the first option, but it just isn’t there… I imagine that somewhere there is a “restore all to default options” option, so I may have to do that and damn the torpedoes.

if you pick Custom and remove everything from the text field, it should revert to default, I guess… worth a shot anyway.

Yes! It worked! Thanks so much, Ivovic, you saved my sanity!

    glad to help.

talk to your host anyway, about mod-rewrite, or at least restarting the web server

Same thing happened to me, somehow htaccess disappeard and it affected permalinks. Weird is that htaccess is gone on root but also on diffrent subdirectories where wordpress is installed…
I put it back, and now it works.
