Hello folks, I was getting a 404 error on Category page with postname.html selected in Permalinks and a period in category base. When I remove the period from category base the word “category” shows in the URL. Is there another way to remove the word “category” beside a period. The reason I don’t want category is because I’m supplanting a Joomla site and in Joomla site categories did not have the word “category” in them.

The site in question is https://amin4x4.com/ and I’m using ThemeZee Beetle as the theme.

I found a tip that word category can be removed by clicking
“Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.” in Yoast SEO. It does strip from the URL but I’m getting a 404 error again. Is there no easy to remove word “category” without getting a 404 error.

I recommend asking in this plugin’s dedicated support sub-forum for better results so its developers and users can help you with this:

Tara, my problem is 404 error when applying any solution that removes the word “category” from the URL. Yoast was just one solution I tried.

404 indicates failure to communicate with the server. Reasons for this failure to communicate with the server can vary.
    – it could be configuration issue
    – it could be memory issue
    – it could be permalinks issue, try reviewing this: How to fix 404 error when using Pretty Permalinks?
    – it could be optimization issue
    – it could be a conflict with plugin: try resetting the plugin folder

Thanks Tara for the comprehensive list. I have checked and this is happening on my other sites as well. As soon as I used any trick to get the word “category” off whether putting a period or using an extension, I get a 404 error. I have checked .htaccess file is fine.

Okay deactivating “Single Category Permalinks” worked. Once I deactivated it and activated Yoast, it is now working. Thanks for your help Tara.

    you are welcome ??

    Hello, I am getting a 404 in sub-forums:

Created a hidden Buddypress Group that has it’s own forum for members of that group only (Using BBPress).

Within group forum I created two sub-forums:
    1 sub forum,
    2 sub forum,

    When I click on either sub-forum I get a 404.
If I create a new topic at the root level it’s fine.

Is there a fix for this?

    Link structure of group forum:
    https://www.mysite.com/groups/private-group/forum/

This auto-generated link to sub-forum, it does not like, gets 404’s:
    https://www.mysite.com/forum/forums/private-group/sub-forum/

I see no way to change forum permalinks under settings.

Thank you kindly for any assistance you can provide. Having sub-forums is much cleaner than creating a new group for every sub-forum.
