404 error for most people, but not Admin for same URL
-
I am green with regard to HTML, though I have used WYSIWYG editors to put up & manage a couple of my own simple sites. I have a WordPress free blog, but have never handled a WordPress site before.
I have been asked to help with a WordPress site but am in a big time crunch with a big problem for the organization. They are bringing in a speaker and we needed to set up a shopping cart to accept online credit card payments for tickets. We set up a Stripe account & the existing website had WooCommerce installed on it. I was able to link the Stripe plug-in to the Stripe dashboard & after some struggle figured out how to add shortcode to an Event page to put in an “ADD TO CART” button.
When I click on it, it takes me to the shopping cart. I was able to purchase a ticket without incident & it showed up on the Stripe dashboard immediately & I received a confirmation receipt immediately via email.
But when everyone else tries, they get a 404 error, page not found, even though the URL is the same one I get when I go to the shopping cart page. When I try in “incognito mode” in Chrome I also get that error message. How could that page not exist in one browser, but be right there when I’m logged in as an admin.
A support person from Siteground logged in and looked at my dashboard, going straight to the permalinks section. She thought everything looked correct, but clicke on the little circle (radio button?) for custom links, but that didn’t fix the problem.
She turned in a support ticket & they checked their servers & said they had no error codes on their end, so it must be a WordPress or WooCommerce issue (or maybe the Stripe plug-in?).
I saw the article about htaccess, but I’m no programmer & have no idea where to find that. Is it something where I could just copy the code in that article & replace everything in that file? Or are there any plug-ins etc. that could reset things for me.
I noticed somewhere that moving directories can cause these kinds of problems. From what I heard, the site had been hacked before Easter & they had to move the site to Siteground. I don’t believe they have had this issue before, but perhaps they have. There was a link to Paypal for donations, but I got an error page (not a 404 one as I recall) & received a donation confirmation email, but it never showed up on Paypal’s dashboard per the president of the organization.
Our newsletter advertising the speaker started hitting mailboxes on Saturday & calls are coming in that they can’t order online. Any help or advice that anyone can give would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
