• Happy Hanukkah! Yesterday I upgraded a hacked site to the latest version. All files were overwritten and are there under FTP. If I go to my site and click ‘LOG IN’it goes to /404. No .php or .html. If I type WP-admin, same thing.

Index.php is new and has no reference to 404. So, which file could be coded to send me to 404 Not Found?

Usually I custom write my error page with a link back to the main page. If I remember (ha!! I have amnesia) I changed it to 404.html and changed another file to point errors there. Can’t remember which files … I believe I also had a mailto: me link and space for them to write what page they were on and what they clicked.

Oops, the error is 404 not found on this server

Check your .htaccess file — delete it, in fact, then create a new one from settings->permalinks by choosing a permalink setting and clicking save.

There isn’t one. That’s what is so odd. I looked for that right away and it isn’t there. The site had no posts yet and no custom header. It was in pre-planning phase. During the time of hacked files, the site loaded a blank page. If deleting all files and starting at the beginning didn’t take hours….

Remain calm and carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

If you’re unable to clean your site(s) successfully, there are reputable organizations that can clean your sites for you. Sucuri and Wordfence are two.
