• Hi All –

I’ve found myself to be unable to login to my admin page because of a 403 error. The help tutorial that I found (below) mentions that this can happen on a login page, but then doesn’t explain how to fix it! I can’t get in to the site to deactivate my plugins.

I don’t have much experience with WordPress (added to my job description just a few months ago), so I really have no idea where to start here.

    Thanks!

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

The only way I’ve ever accessed our site is through the login page – what does “table wp_options” mean when you’re using phpMyAdmin?

I don’t have a host – or if I do, I don’t know what it is or how to use it. I’ve only ever accessed our site via the webpage. Is there something I’m missing?

You’ll need to find out who your hosting provider is.

WordPress is just software, you install and run it on a hosting provider.

If you don’t know the hosting provider, it’s kind of like complaining that you can’t get into a bedroom, without even knowing the house’s address.

I recommend getting in touch with whomever is administering the site, or whomever you took over the site from, they can point you in the right direction.

Would the company Network Solutions have anything to do with this? I know we register our domain with them.

I’m sorry, we’re a small nonprofit that only employs two people. I was tasked with managing and administering our website this last spring, after the previous employee was fired for some unethical math in the budget, so I can’t reach out to that person. Haha. I’m learning on the go.

That’s possible, Network Solutions sells both domain registration and hosting services.

I recommend contacting them, you’ll want to make sure that you have secured the hosting account, if anything to keep the billing info current. No hosting = no site.
