3rd Party Hosted Plugins Concern

I’ve been noticing a growing trend lately. What’s with all the plugins that make you sign up with a 3rd party account, where the service is hosted through the 3rd party but “plugs in” through your WordPress blog even though it’s not truly running from your WordPress site? Are we losing the days where plugins are hosted through our own WordPress site, taking away our site’s uniqueness?!
