    Hello,

I have been getting defrauded regularly on my website by fraudsters using stolen credit cards, it’s costing me hundreds and running me into the ground very quickly. PayPal will not offer seller protection on most of these fraudulent transactions and fighting the card companies is a losing battle.

I checked with my PayPal account manager and it turns out 3DS 2.0 is not enabled as they claim it is not supported by Woocommerce, is this true? Are the 800,000+ people using this plugin not getting the security benefits of this common technology?

    Message from PayPal:
“I just confirm with product team, we can provide the 3DS function, but request merchant’s wensite is in self-integrated, not support in Woo-commerce.

Maybe you can check with your IT guy whether you have self-integrated website?”

  • Hi @nanasflowers – Thanks for reaching out! I’m a little confused by PayPal’s response.

Based on their docs, PayPal actually handles 3DS themselves or Smart Payment Buttons (what PayPal Checkout uses): https://developer.paypal.com/docs/business/checkout/add-capabilities/3d-secure/

Can you include a screenshot of the conversation you had with PayPal?

    Thanks!

I’m not sure I could publicly post a screenshot as it includes sensitive details.

However we simply asked ‘PayPal should be using 3D secure which stops unauthorised credit card purchases’ – Obviously when we say “stop” we mean drasticly reduce as I’m sure it would be impossible to eliminate it 100%.

The response we got is what I quoted in my original post.

So I’m going to assume it is supported and PayPal are advising me incorrectly?

    Hey there,

Indeed, PayPal handles fraud protection on their end. If fraud gets through, they’ll usually work with you on it. I’d recommend contacting their support team again:

I did some searching specifically to check if our PayPal Checkout plugin handles 3DSecure – we don’t have any mention of it because this is all handled on PayPal’s side.

Turns out PayPal tried to fob me off with the first reason and it actually transpires that 3DS 2.0 is not availble from PayPal in the APAC region of the world, PayPal leaves us open to massive credit card fraud here. Not a fault of the plugin, all on PayPal.
