• I am starting a new site and it is the new WP 3.8.1 and I don’t see the Editor under the Appearance tab. Am I missing something? I use custom cc or a child theme when making changes, but I like to use the Editor to look at the theme files so I know where to start with the overrides.

Can anyone tell me why this isn’t an option anymore?

  • Erm… it should still be there. This is a self-hosted WP site isn’t it? If so, try re-uploading a complete set of freshly download core files.

It is a hosted site on www.remarpro.com but it was a backup file from wordpress.com. Is that the issue?

Sorry? Do you means that you imported content from a wordpress.com site?

    yes

Then that will not have affected anything on your site other than adding content to it. Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Thank you for your help. I finally realized it may have something to do with godaddy and called them. They have a new ‘manage wordpress’ account and it limits the editing capabilities. Once I downgraded and reinstalled I could get to the control panel on the server and into the Editor on WordPress. Good to know now and for others to know. Don’t let them upsell you! ??

Hi I have the same problem and was beginning to think it might be my hosts….

Poblem being my host company is 1&1.es. In other words they are a spanish company and I do not speak Spanish… I just know its them as have dealt with their british side before and they were useless there… Your words have induced me to bash my head on the desk…thanks ??

My fix: I had installed Sucuri Security plugin. Under their “Hardening” :-

    Plugin & Theme editor
Occasionally you may wish to disable the plugin or theme editor to prevent overzealous users from being able to edit sensitive files and potentially crash the site. Disabling these also provides an additional layer of security if a hacker gains access to a well-privileged user account.

If you select “harden” this will disable “Editor” in Appearance.

I reverted it and got my Editor back!!!

You might have another security plugin installed which is doing the same thing.

There was code “define( ‘DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT’, false );” defined on Wp-config.php which led me to Sucuri plugin. You could just remove that code.

If i’m not using self-hosted wordpress, but using subscription plans on wordpress.com instead, is it possible to enable “Editor” option in nav menu?
