I got a similar installation failure as the OP, only less problems:

The 4 above-mentioned files all have Permissions 644, just like the rest, so I am thinking I should back them up and delete them and try reinstalling 3.8!

I’ll let you know how things proceed

On one of four sites I Updated today, the installer could not/did not remove the .maintenance file from the system upoon completion. This condition results in a maintenance mode message page being loaded for both front end and admin areas. That particular site has all the exact same perms as two others that were installed successfully on the same server. I double checked that first thing when the file was not removed. Once .maintenance was removed manually from the affected sites root file directory, the site loaded and the install had indeed completed. I had other installation issues but they got resolved in another forum thread just a few moments ago and were on my side.

Not the exact same issue as yours, but something whacky about the way the installer dealt with file perms in this case. On a site identical to two others installations on the same server which did NOT have that issue arise.

This has definately been the quirkiest WP upgrade I’ve ever experienced out of lots of them over the years.

      =======================SOLUTION <<<=======================

Well deleting ‘wp-includes/date.php’ didn’t work because the updater needs it!
    Same with ‘wp-admin/includes/class-wp-upgrader-skins.php’

However the other 2 files didn’t mind being deleted!

Solution was just to set the Permissions to ‘777’ on both ‘essential files!

    Installation went without a hitch!

To make it easier for you don’t go to the bother of backing up and deleting any files, just set Permissions on all of them (the ones mentioned in your failure report) to ‘777’.
No need to reset them to ‘644’ after successful installation, the Installer does it for you.

I set Permissions through the CPanel ‘File Manager’ (last column on the right hand side) but you can use any FTP Program such as ‘FileZilla’ if you are so inclined!
    Cheers!

    I get similar installation failure:

    Could not copy file.: wordpress/wp-includes/SimplePie/XML/Declaration/Parser.php
    Installation Failed

While updating to 3.8, it just spins – screen indicates: “unpacking the update” but it never goes any further. Stays on this screen indefinitely. Help? Ideas? I’m

@cindy hamel – please start your own thread if the solutions in this thread do not work for you.

When I try the automatic update I get this:

Warning: md5_file(/home/ywcamain/public_html/wp-cron.php) [function.md5-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/ywcamain/public_html/wp-admin/includes/update-core.php on line 756

The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-cron.php

    Installation Failed

I haven’t a clue as to what to do. Any help would be appreciated!
