• I’ve been able to install WP 3.8 on several of my websites but there are a couple where it just won’t install — the spinning half circle in my Chrome tab goes on forever but never installs. I tried just shutting the browser tab and coming back to it later — no change. One of these sites is a twenty eleven child theme, another uses a twenty ten child theme. All other plugins are up to date. Anyone having a similar experience? Any ideas what I can do to install 3.8?

  • Have you deactivated the plugins and switching to an unmodified default theme prior to updating? Have you tried updating manually?

WPyogi, thanks for the suggestions — I had not tried those so I just went to one of the sites and deactivated the plugins, switched to an unmodified default theme, and uploaded 3.8 manually — and I got this error message:

“The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.
    Theme install failed.”

I don’t understand the error message — is this saying the new 3.8 theme is missing the style.css file?

Might be a file permissions issue –

I’m having a similar issue. When I try to upgrade to 3.8. I get a max file error in php.ini
    Any suggestions.
I need simple answers as I don’t know the terminology regarding websites. ??

@canwoodchuck – could you start a new thread – your question really isn’t the same. Thanks.

@jonathanr62 – I’m having exactly the same error. Nothing happens after clicking Update Now just a forever loading chrome circle. Found any solutions?

@jonathanr62 – have you tried using a different browser?

I was asked to move this post to a new thread. But there hasn’t been any response as of yet. I’ll let you know if I find a solution.

@deepanshkhurana – please start your own thread as posted right above your post.

So far no solution. I’ve used Chrome throughout and so far 16 of my WordPress websites have updated with no problem, but 6 have gotten stuck in the forever loading Chrome circle. It doesn’t appear to be an issue with web hosting as some sites on the same shared hosting account update with no problem and others don’t. I’ll try a different browser for those that haven’t updated and I’m still trying to figure out what permission settings could be different. I’ll share with the group as soon as I can figure it out.

    Thanks for your efforts Jonathan

Okay, I’ve narrowed it down: 5 of my 6 websites that won’t update to 3.8 are on HostMonster’s (same as BlueHost) “pro” web hosting package. The 6th website successfully updated when i tried again just now. I’d mis-remembered where some of these sites are so thought they were spread over a couple of different types of hosting plans. I didn’t customize any settings for pro hosting that aren’t on my other websites so it would appear to be something in the default set-up… All the sites in question have been out for at least two years so many WP version updates have been made without incident until now. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I would be very curious to know if others who have had problems can trace it to “pro” web hosting, especially of the BlueHost / Hostmonster variety.
