• Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to block pingbacks and trackbacks from specific websites? For example, if I post something in Blog A about Blog B, currently, Blog B gets a comment linking it to Blog A. I don’t want this, but I do want trackbacks and pingbacks from other people’s blogs and sites.

    Does that makes sense?

That is the pingback function that performs that not trackbacks. Go into Admin > options > discussion

The top checkbox is labled “Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.”

Make sure that box is unchecked. That will disable pingbacks going out and speed up posting a little because WP won’t search through your post for eligable URLS to ping.

But then it won’t ping anyone, right? I think I still want to ping other sites.

nmallory: are you trying to block incoming pingbacks and trackbacks from specific sites; or are you trying to block outgoing pingbacks and trackbacks to specific sites?

    It goes from this:

” if I post something in Blog A about Blog B, currently, Blog B gets a comment linking it to Blog A. I don’t want this,

    To this:

“But then it won’t ping anyone, right? I think I still want to ping other sites.”

Yep you’re right it won’t ping anyone but that’s what you first asked for.

Here is my advice from nearly three years blogging, shitcan pings all together. They are redundent and not needed when a trackback is utilized. With TB you pick when, where and how they go out.

    End of story!

    Skippy – either, I guess.

I have 3 blogs. I often refer to recipes in one of the blogs from the other two, but I don’t want the comments to show up on the recipe site with the link to the other blogs.

I guess I can just turn off the pingback on all of them and forget it.

I guess I don’t really understand the difference between pingback and trackback or how they work.

Trackbacks and Pingbacks are described in the WordPress Codex.

Yep you’re right it won’t ping anyone but that’s what you first asked for.

Actually, he didn’t ask to “not ping anyone”; he asked how to make WordPress not ping his own sites.

    erm. “her own sites”. ??

I think we need gender oriented avatars.

Currently, pingbacks and trackbacks don’t have very granular controls. The “easiest” solution is to disable pingbacks and trackbacks globally (in Options -> Discussion), and then manually list trackback URIs for those sites you do want to “ping”.

Note also that I’ve submitted ticket 1489, proposing a new plugin hook for a plugin to handle this “problem”.
