Yesterday I installed the latest version of WordPress (3.6.1) for a new site. I always develop locally before I start working on a live server – I did not have this problem while working through XAMPP.

There are two themes currently installed – A parent theme and a child theme (I am using the child theme). The theme I am using uses a Gallery, which is where I am using the Add Media button. However, the Add Media button does not work in Posts either.

There are no plugins activated. And I have also tried the Twenty-Twelve theme to make sure it wasn’t just a theme confliction.

I should also mention that I am unable to switch from the the Visual editor to Text editor.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Where did you download the parent theme from? does the Add Media work with the parent theme?

The parent theme was purchased from Themeforest, the child theme was conveniently already included in the digital download.

And no, the Add Media does not work in the parent theme either – I tired that before posting. The only thing I haven’t tried is installing the WordPress files again (which I am doing now, with the exception of the content directory).

I’m sorry but as you are using a commercial theme, you need to seek support from the theme’s developer/vendor. We do not support commercial products here.

Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Thirteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

I replicated the problem using the Twenty Twelve theme; the Add Media button does not work. I will try the Twenty Thirteen theme once the files are finished uploading and report back.

After replacing all of the files and reverting back to the default theme (Twenty Thirteen), I am still encountering the same problem. The Text editor option is not available and the Add Media button still does not work.

All plugins have been deactivated from the very beginning.

When I right click on the Add Media button and open it in a new tab it brings me straight back to the new post page. It’s as if the action for that button does not exist or is broken.

Can you try checking your site’s error logs for messages? Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.

The only errors I see are:
[Wed Oct 23 01:56:05 2013] [error] [client ####] File does not exist: public_html/wp-content/themes/custom_theme
[Wed Oct 23 01:56:05 2013] [error] [client ####] File does not exist: public_html/404.shtml

All old files were deleted from the server before this new install.

Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the root wp-config.php & .htaccess files and the the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    I did that already.

    Try again.

Update: The Add Media button is now working – at least opening the pop-up (without re-uploading). However, when I go to add the media to the post, it doesn’t execute.

The Visual editor does not display the text toolbar. And the text appears white (so you cannot see it, unless you highlight it).

Sounds like you still have corrupted core files. Are you deleting the core files as I initially suggested before re-uploading from a fresh download?

I deleted all the files with the exception of the few that you listed. Re-uploaded the missing files from a fresh WordPress download. The Add Media button is not working, but the visual toolbar is now visible and when I type into the Gallery/Post it is no longer white font.

I tried using the Add Media button using the theme that was purchased, and the default theme, Twenty Thirteen.

Switching to the Text editor option is still not possible.

I am sorry but I cannot find any reason for your current problems other than files are being corrupted when you upload them. Perhaps you need to speak to your hosts about this and check that your FTP software is configured correctly.

I’ve been using the same FTP software for 2 years. I’ve had no problem uploading to this server before or any other server when installing WordPress. I’m going to scrap all of the files in the root directory, delete the database and try a complete install again. Hopefully that works.

Thank you for your time and suggestions!
