• Since automatic updates to 3.5 I have the following problems:

    • visual editor is not working – can write in text only and there is no toolbar
    • the media uploader does not insert images into posts

I have read other troubleshooting advice and tried the following:

    • disabling plugins
    • switching to twentytwelve theme
    • downloading a fresh version of 3.5 and manually reinstalling all folders other than wp-content
    • adding the line of code as follows to end of wp-config.php file:
      define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false ); and re-uploading the file

I use the Weaver II Pro theme for all my sites.

Nothing has fixed the problem with WordPress 3.5. Now I have six different sites to which I can upload only text.

Although I can use FTP and find my way around Hostgator’s CPanel, I am not a techie and generally, I can’t fix problems with code, although I did manage to add the recommended line of code to the wp-config.php file.

I guess what I want to know is (since I can’t roll back my sites to the previous version without re-posting everything): will there be an updated version of 3.5 SOON that can fix all these problems with an automatic update?

Here’s the site where I first had the problem… but I’ve checked a couple of my other sites and have exactly the same issues.

I’m also with Hostgator so that could be the problem. I’m going to attempt a manual upgrade tomorrow – hope I can do this without blowing up my site!

I contacted Hostgator and Technical only offered to upload a backup copy of my site and downgrade to a lesser version of WP. So for those of you who are not technical this is an option for you. Please contact Hostgator and let them know of this problem. This may be an overall issue with hosting companies auto-upgrade services and not just a HG problem but who’s to really know.

For those of you who have auto-upgrade enabled… you may want to disable it and perform your upgrades manually. Hostgators response to my claim that their auto-upgrade caused admin issues was “you enabled the auto-upgrade and that’s the risk you take.” So, that’s reassuring!

That’s all I have folks. Good luck!

WHEW! Marg… I did exactly what you did and it WORKED! THANK GOD! So, thank you, thank you for posting what worked for you.

In my most recent experience with a new WordPress install, I experienced the exact same as the OP mentioned.

However, rather than spend time uploading majority of the new folders/files (excluding wp-content), I tried jumping directly to the source.

Since the tinymce was affected, I targeted the following root location for a quick visual inspection: wp-includes/js/tinymce.

In my case, I was missing some of the required files in the tinymce folder. After new files completed uploading, I switched over to my Admin panel, Pages, Edit Page view and immediately noticed my toolbar.

    Cheers!
