After updating to 3.4.1 I get a 404 error when I log in and try to access my dashboard. The log in works and the website is still working, only error is 404 when I click dashboard.

I have already tried a few suggestions in other posts:
renaming my theme folder “-old”…blanked out my screen
changing plugin folder to plugin.hold…nothing changed

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    1. clear cookies
    2. exit browser
    3. make sure local firewall is not causing problem
    4. login with https://www.yourdomain.com/wp-login.php

if these steps don’t help then try:

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

The first four steps did not work. Can you clarify the next part?
When I re-upload all files and folders from a fresh download…do I download a fresh WP locally then move files via FTP? Thank you for your help!

amberm: I was having the same issue and yes I downloaded a new wordpress locally and then used a ftp file manager to upload and overwrite the files, all except the wp-content folder and I can finally log back in. I use GoDaddy and I used the java ftp transfer, it was really easy. just a pain.

    Everyone,

I managed to fix this issue and I am not the most computer savvy of people. Here’s what I did:

    – Downloaded WordPress 3.4.1 and extracted the files to my desktop.

    – Accessed my FTP file manager (which, for me, is provided by GoDaddy.com).

    – With the FTP file manager I selected all of the 3.4.1 files EXCEPT FOR THE “wp-content” FILE. When you go to upload, remember to DESELECT that folder, or you will overwrite all of the content you’ve created on your site and all will be lost.

    – Uploaded/overwrote the files (for me, there were 17 files).

    – Check and see if you can access the wp-admin Dashboard (I could not).

    – Next, in the FTP file manager, I opened up the “wp-admin” and “wp-includes” folders individually. I uploaded/overwrote ALL of the files in these folders with the freshly downloaded 3.4.1 ones on my desktop. I did this for both of the folders.

    – After doing this, I was able to access the Dashboard. But before I could, there was a page that said something about having to update the database. With no other options, I clicked the update button and waited. Viola! I now have full access to my dashboard.

I hope this works for you guys. If you find that it does, please get on at least one forum and re-post what you did to solve it in easy-to-follow instructions. There are A LOT of people who are freaking out over this issue.

I am using this process to update other sites and is has worked successfully! Thank you KimVacc and grayscalexlii for your clarification.

As a side note, my client updated to WP 3.4.1 on his own when he received the email notification from GoDaddy. This magically fixed his website and I did not have to go through any additional steps. I’m not sure if this is common, as I’ve only built 3 WP sites. But I may try this more in the future instead of updating from my dashboard.
