• I just finished installing Word press for the first time in during my initial login. I received the error message, 403 forbidden.
You don’t have permission to access /cgi-bin/wordpress/wp-admin/ on this server.

    any suggestions?

  • Why is your WordPress directory in the cgi-bin folder? It is not supposed to be there…

I was under the impression that.php files are supposed to be in a CGI section of my hosting company. I tried to reinstall Word press under my https://www.folder, and I’ve not been able to get any positive results. Shouldn’t Word press be in my CGI?

I found the five-minute installation instructions to be a little fuzzy. Is there a link to better or more complete way to install?

I keep on trying to get in through.

how do I get permission? Any suggestions…

Who is your hosting company? WP files are NOT supposed to be in a cgi-bin.

    Netfirms.com.
    — I would not highly recommend them… I’ve been working with some other blogging software that supports RSS, and they have not helpful. Or willing to update their servers

And where does it say you have to put PHP scripts in cgi-bin? I couldn’t find anything like that. BTW, are you on the “Plus” plan? That one doesn’t have MySQL database…

I’m on the advantage plan… and I created a database. For my new blog.
There is no place that it says that I need to put PHP scripts in my cgi-bin. I’m kind of stuck trying to get accessto my server… thank you so much for looking into this for me — greatly appreciated.

I have contacted my hosting company, but I’ve not heard back from them yet.

If yoiu have created the database, then you should know the 4 pieces of info that you need to put into the config file.
Upload the WP files to the root or into a directory called blog or wordpress or whatever you decide. Run the install.php according to the instructions.

    Hello,
this happens because Apache doesn’t know that the default file is ‘index.php’.
    Try placing the following line:
    DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
in a file called ‘.htaccess’ at the root of your site.

    regards,
    Sylvain

chaz19, I just want to say this since no one else has – PHP files of any sort do not, repeat do NOT belong in the cgi-bin. Generally cgi scripts go in a the cgi-bin (thus the name) and some other files. But never will you need to put PHP files in there.

Move all your wordpress files into the directory you want your blog to live in (in this case I assume the root), run your installation again and you should be golden.

oh god, sdem, you are so helpful!!!!!!!
