• When doing the automatic upgrade to 3.3, the download unpacks, site goes into maintenance mode and then it indicates it is installing the upgrade. It never advances beyond that point on that page, even though the upgrade completes and maintenance mode is turned off. If I go to the dashboard, everything looks normal with a successful upgrade. All WP upgrades previous to 3.3 completed normally. This has occurred on 2 upgrades so far so there may be an issue of some sort.

  • Have you tried deactivating all plugins & switching to the Twenty Eleven theme before upgrading?

No I didn’t. These upgrades were on 2 different sites, 2 different theme frameworks (genesis and thesis), and the only common plugin between the two sites is akismet. I’ll try another update and do the Twenty Eleven with no plugin route and see if it works.

Tried that. No plugins running, Twenty Eleven theme, update page still hangs on the “installing the upgrade …” step of the process, but the upgrade seems to have finished successfully. Site comes up and maintenance mode is off, I can log out, log back in, update posts, etc.

Something on the server? What should I look for?

    Try upgrading manually.

New info. Since yesterday, I have upgraded to a brand new server. It was already scheduled, not because of this problem. I again tried to upgrade another WP site and the same issue occurred. The update page hangs even though the upgrade completed.

I am on a dedicated server with only my sites, about a dozen or so in all.

Again, previous to 3.3, all upgrades on all sites have gone without incident.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

A manual upgrade would most likely work fine and I can do that on one of the next ones, I am just bringing this up because the auto upgrades always worked without any issue previously and the first sites I upgrade are usually the most basic ones with nothing complex involved or lots of new plugins. Though nothing changed on my end with those sites, perhaps something changed on the WP side which affects the way the update page returns status.

Yes, as indicated above, I tried Twenty Eleven with no plugins active. Also, 2 different theme frameworks, genesis and thesis, and the only common plugin is akismet.

Have you looked in your server’s error logs for any clues?
