AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
to the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

Thanks, esmi, but I’m a website/codebuilder idiot/virgin. Where is that file to be found, and how does it relate to the automated download function? Appreciate your reply (and patience ) with this Homer Simpson of the webcode world. BTW, I’m a Mac user…..

The file will be in your WordPress folder. Ensure that your FTP client or file management application is configured to show all files as the .htaccess file is often hidden by default. Only open or edit the file using a plain text editor.

The .htaccess file can be used to control many aspects of server behaviour of a per domain/site basis. The problems you describe with downloads are common on servers that have not yet been fully configured to use PHP 5. The line above addresses this.

If there’s no .htaccess file, use a plain text editor to create a file named .htaccess with the content that esmi listed and upload it with an FTP or SFTP client to the same directory as the wp-load.php file.

Probably not. Though most people find installing WordPress to be a breeze, this is the first time that I’ve heard WordPress described as a “pig.” In this case, the problem is your server’s configuration, not WordPress.

“The version on Fantastico is the most updated version which is compatible with Fantastico and cPanel; there is no need to update once the version is installed. Later updates need to be done via Fantastico.

Most WordPress users employ the use of a permalink structure besides the default at Settings/Permalinks in their admin panel, which automatically creates a .htaccess file. It’s just one of those minor details that we moderators tend to forget after collectively responding to hundreds of topics each day.

Unfortunately, we have no control over what version Fantastico offers and what hosting provider perceive to be the most up to date versions. There are still hosting providers out there who’s Fantastico installs WP 2.8.6. It’s a sad case indeed.

It took some research on what .htaccess was and where to put it (since I couldn’t find it), but adding Esmi’s code enabled auto-upgrade to complete its task when it had hung repeatedly.

I had never saved a dot-first file like .htaccess and was surprised that it could be done. Thank you Notepad.

I understand michaelv’s frustrations, but it is such a good feeling to be able to work things out successfully from the info so generously supplied on WP. Again, many thanks and keep up the great work.
