I decided to re develop our event site and created redirects form each old page to each new page but now find in Google webmaster thet the 404 errors on the old site are suddenly being created on the new site.

What have I done wrong and how can I avoid this as the old site had around 70 404 errors from 2 years ago which i had redirected. They just keep coming back even though I created 301 redirects on the old site. This was also a factor in starting the site afresh!

  • The redirects that you created aren’t working as expected and hence the 404. Try to set them up manually, by editing the .htaccess file. You can follow the instructions here to edit the .htaccess file or you could use a plugin like this to ensure the redirects are working properly.

    Hi Saravan

Thanks for the reply. The redirects I created are working for each page. e.g.mysite.com/page1 to mynewsite.compage1

The problem is the Google is suddenly giving me loads of 404 errors to my new site on old 404 errors (some even a few years back) from my old site!1

I am using the plugin 303 redirection and the pages work fine!

If the redirects are working fine, I would suggest you mark these urls as fixed in the Google webmaster console and wait for a few days to see if Google comes up with the error messages. It is very likely that the errors will not pop up again.

    Hi Saravanan

Thanks for your support and sincere apologies for the late reply. You were correct and they disappeared but after a week or so.
