• Hi There,

A while back I built a website in HTML. It did not do much and then I became more familiar with WP. I decided I wanted to switch my HTML website over to WP using the same domain. I have some backlinks out there and would like the links to head to my WP site both for traffic and SEO.

I have not been able to find any understandable info on how to do this and would like to ask people on here if you have any ideas or a source that might help.

    Thank You: Chris.

  • If you’re not comfortable with setting up custom redirects in your .htaccess file (and most people aren’t), give this plugin a look:

    Hey Peter,

That plugin works great and is incredibly easy. I set it up and had my first redirect in about 3 minutes. Thanks a lot. Do you know if that does the same thing as it would in the .htaccess file as far as SEO and how search engines looks at it.

    Thanks again!

Based on what I’m seeing on teh description page (I havent used it myself), it looks like it uses the WP permalinks functionality to build your redirects. I think that that would technically be a little slower than hacking your .htaccess file (especially if your site is big – like 5k+ posts big), but the difference is most likely negligible.

As far as the SEO value – the plugin is claiming (and I don’t have any reason to doubt it) that it sets up 301 redirects, which are the same flavor you’d get in a .htaccess redirect. I’d go for it.

My site is small, just under 5k posts, so I shouldn’t have a problem and it seems to working alright. I will take their word for it about the SEO.

    Thanks
