3.0 Stuck in Maintenance Mode after failed plugin upgrade

    My wordpress 3.0 is stuck in maintenance mode, after I tried to upgrade a plugin, the plugin upgrade failed stating:-

    “Failed to create directory /public_html”

    Now the whole site even the /wp-admin just shows this message:

    “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”

    Even if maintenance mode is enabled, I should still be able to access /wp-admin no?

    Any help!?

  • Try deleting the file called “.maintenance” in the root of the site’s web folder.

    That should disable the maintenance mode.

    That worked.

    I have the same problem. I don’t know how to find the site’s web folder though.

    Then that screen disappeared and got the following message:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function set_current_screen() in /usr/www/users/sfpal/wp-admin/admin.php on line 129

    Same issue deleted maintenance file can now view site but not able to upgrade plugin is a fix required? Goes back into maintenance mode and displays message as indicated above.

    my blog disappeared entirely and I cant access even the dashboard..nothing
    help anyone?

    I am unable to get into the admin area for my blog since this fatal error message appeared so I can’t disable the maintenance mode in my blog. I need help please ………….

    you guys need to log in to FTP and do the task said in the second post on this thread. You can’t do it from admin panel since it won’t let you. FTP is the only way to resolve this.

    Even after deleting the maintenance file, this problem persists. Unable to update any plugins at WP 3.0. The “failed to create directory /public_HTML/” error message is shown and a new mainenance file is recreated. How can successful update my plugins in 3.0?

    I could only get my plugins updated after WP 3.0, if I deleted the maintenance file each time I updated a plugin. Seems like there is a bug here.

    I had the same issue change the 2nd line in the file ‘wp-activate.php’

    from:

    define( “WP_INSTALLING”, true );

    to

    define( “WP_INSTALLING”, false );

    Changing the define is not a solution for the maintenance mode setting. It could affect future updates for you. If you’re stuck in maintenance mode, you should delete the .maintenance file from your WordPress directory using FTP or shell access. You may need to set your client to show hidden files.

    I think the wider issue though is that there’s a number of people in this thread describing different problems, and you’d probably be best with your own threads.

    well, my first guess would be, if you got stuck in maintenance mode while upgrading plugins, maybe a plugin went bad.

    After deleting the .maintenance file, if you are still getting errors, try resetting your plugins by ftp and see if that helps

    Terrible feature. Taking the whole site down for updating the most minor of plugins, and the risk of not being able to bringing the site back. Will have to do plugin upgrades manually from now on. A step backwards.
