• My blog has been very slow, average page loads of 20 seconds. This has been since I upgraded to 2.7. I have since upgraded to 2.8 and saw no improvement.

    I exported the files to WordPress.com to see if it was my hosting provider or my blog that was a problem. After importing all my files to wordpress.com, the blog runs super fast (amberstang.wordpress.com). I would stay there, except I can’t use java script and there are only a pitiful number of widgets available.

    So next I checked my hosting provider Yahoo to see what version of PHP and MySQL were loaded there.
    WordPress minimum requirements are:
    * PHP version 4.3 or greater
    * MySQL version 4.0 or greater

    Yahoo information:
    * PHP version 4.3.11
    * MySQL client version: 3.23.49
    * Server version: 4.1.14

    The PHP and MySQL server version look fine, but the client version of MySQL needs to be upgraded. I contacted Yahoo and received the following response:

    Thank you for contacting Yahoo! Small Business Support.

    I understand that your WordPress blog is running slowly and you would
    like to upgrade to Mysql 4.x.

    At this time Yahoo! Web Hosting has no plans to upgrade to newer
    versions of our server software. Based on current user needs, we have
    found that the software that is available meets the needs of a majority
    of our users. Yahoo! Web Hosting continually evaluates the needs of
    users as well as security alerts and technology trends to determine when a software upgrade is required.

    We thank you for your inquiry regarding upgrades to Yahoo! Web Hosting.
    We will forward your inquiry to our Web Hosting Suggestions department
    for further consideration.

    So here are my questions: Is the client side MySQL something that I can load on the server myself? If so, how difficult is it to do? I know nothing about PHP or databases and would need step by step instruction for dummies.

    And if this is something that can not be fixed, can someone recommend a good hosting provider?

    Thanks very much for any help you could provide.

  • I don’t believe the ‘client side’ has anything to do with your performance.

    How to update client side MySQL to 4.X

    The MySQL server version is what you really need to be concerned with, and it is not something you would have any control over. The server version is “* Server version: 4.1.14” according to the info they gave you. WordPress docs do indeed state:

    “WordPress server requirements for Version 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8: MySQL version 4.0 or greater “

    However, looking forward;

    “WordPress server requirements for Version 2.9: MySQL version 4.1.2 or greater”

    So, considering their (yahoo’s) response, and the rapid advancement of WordPress development, perhaps the exploration of a new host may not be a bad idea. Here is a good starter page for information.
