2.8.3 upgrade broke my navbar – it now says “no categories”

I just did the update to 2.8.3 and for some reason it stopped my navbar from showing any categories. Now it just says “no categories”

I checked my posts and they all still have categories assigned. I tried disabling all plugins, then creating a new test category then making a new post and assigning it to that test cateory, but that didn’t help. I’ve never modified any core wordpress files. Any ideas?
