• There are SO many things wrong with 2.8 that I simply cannot list them all. Here are the highlights…

    • Widget Page – I know we all wanted to be able to move widgets around, but this ‘solution’ is laughable at best. It is VERY slow. Once you have widgets in place you cannot again move them. They are stuck. You must delete them and start over. The sidebars often do not open/close. Trying to add widgets only creates new ’emply’ widget place holders at the bottom of the sidebar. This is a HUGE screw-up and it’s nearly impossible to work with. Regarding the place to put widgets removed it’s a stupid idea. Waste of page space. The ONLY postive thing is that you can now copy/paste code inside the widget.
    • Editing plug-ins – This area seems to have a mind of it’s own. Sometime you can edit code, but most of the time it simply locks up and you are forced to dump the page and then pull the plug-in from the directory manually. This never happened on 2.7.1.
    • The ‘claim’ that 2.8 is way faster is false. It is just the opposite. I use Atahualpa 3.3.3 by BFA WebDesign and previously had page loads of less than 1 second. Always. Now I see 6’s, 10’s, 20’s with the EXACT same content.
These items are not all, but they alone make this upgrade a horror to work with and will do nothing but drive people away from WordPress. It’s that bad!

2.8 should have never been released. It is no where near ready. I certainly hope WordPress has some MAJOR updates to 2.8 VERY soon. They have nearly put many Bloggers out of business.

  • I agree with you, my friend. This version of WP is terrible! I never saw so many bugs in a same version of wordpress!

Sweet_Baby_Girl (sounds odd addressing someone like that…),

Give the 2.8 troubleshooting FAQ a read. That seems to fix most of the problems with 2.8.

Also if you haven’t already, make sure you backup your files and database FIRST. This way if you make a huge mistake, you will have the option of putting it back before you started poking at it.

It works fine for me… upgrade went very smoothly and I’ve not had any problems with it, everything mentioned in this thread works just fine for me. Unless I’ve got some magic copy that works OK… ??

My upgrade went swimmingly as well, love the new version.

To be honest, before blaming WP as a whole, people should first look at their own set-up and try to identify if it’s something at their end first, eg. plugins.

I concur. The fact that some people have upgraded perfectly well shows the upgrade itself is fine; if it was buggered, everybody would be affected, no?? I’ve now upgraded a total of 4 2.7 blogs to 2.8, some large, some small, all are fine.

Upgrading is one thing. Actually working on the upgraded website is another. I already “lost” one website due to the upgrade. And before you say that I have to look at my plugins, I just installed a fresh WordPress with 2 plugins, one being Akismet and the other upload+.

I went to options to change my time and my site crashed. This kind of thing has never in my history with WordPress happpened before and I have been using it since version 1.5. This is seriously the worse upgrade ever.

What does that mean? White page of death, peppered with PHP error messages?

Just out of abstract curiosity, does it happen to you when your fresh install does not have upload+ ?

The majority of the problems described in the first post all sound javascript related. Make sure all your javascript files got updated, clear your browser cache, etc. If the javascript isn’t loaded in the browser right, things won’t work properly.

For example, you can indeed move widgets once they’re placed. The fact that you can’t shows that something is wrong with your specific site, not with 2.8 in general.

And of course, disable your plugins when debugging these issues. Plugins can interfere, and I’ve seen a number of incompatible plugins and such.

This upgrade has been a complete disaster for me as well. I also could not move widgets, my Dashboard no longer displays and photos cannot be uploaded. I have restored once from my host company and then tried manually going back to 2.7 which completely broke the Dashboard.

I agree this should not have been released as is.

    Add to this another problem.

In 2.8 on the admin screens the title is switched from BlogName < MenuItem to MenuItem < BlogName.

So if you have tabs with 14 blogs on each screen you get:
    MenuItem < | MenuItem < | MenuItem < | MenuItem < | MenuItem < | MenuItem < | MenuItem < | MenuItem <

For your tab titles.. This makes switching to the correct blog like playing the card memory game.

As noted in another comment, my hosting site tried to restore but the Dashboard is still a mess. Everything is on the left side. I have asked that they completely delete the folder containing my site and restore a backup completely from scratch. I am hoping this works but if not, any help on how to get the Dashboard OK again would be appreciated.

Should really start a new thread as this one has been beaten to death already… That said, can you do a database and file backup before your host provider does this?

Here is why I am asking: deleting the folder containing your site and then restoring the files and the database from an earlier version should work, since WordPress lives in your database and the files will match that database.

If they only restore the files for 2.7.1 and the database contains the updates to 2.8, you may still have problems since there were some database changes in 2.8. If you can backup right now both the files and database, then at least you’ll maintain the status quo for your blog and you won’t make the situation worse.

If that does happen, let us know what you are seeing and we’ll see if it can be sorted out.

So far, I’m not having any problems. That said, I HATE the plugins page now. It’s too disorganized.

I like it better when inactives were seperated from actives, and it makes absolutely no sense to have changed it.

Also, in Admin mode you can no longer right click “Visit Site” on the top right to open in a new tab…something I constant do when opening clients sites.

I’m in love with the new “Add Themes” feature, something I was hoping would be added.

Suggestion for next update: Add “Choose Colors” for admin section; Group plugins by active status again.

I can’t seem to do any ftp’ing that works. If they delete the folder completely and then restore an earlier version, should it not just be what was there then…and that I would loose content made after that point? I am now asking my hosting company to go back to a previous database version as well. I hope this fixes my issue. I will keep you posted.

I have spent days literally on this. I am exhausted.
