2.6.1 multi problems -theme, links, index

php 4.4.7/mysql 5.0.51a-community [detailed install 2.6.1 3 attempts]

I need help please!!
Cannot bring up blog via https://sitename/blog.

• url for blog opens the file index, not the blog-(siteurl is set to https://sitename/blog), DB and dash show https://sitename/blog
• to get to blog I have to click blog/index.php
• to get to dashboard I have to click blog/wp-admin/index.php
• in dashboard home, theme click goes to index of /blog
• DB shows theme set to xeiro but blog displays default
• In the blog the blog title entry goes to file index

File perms=644, folder perms=755

wp-options shows:
