My joy at seeing the new version of WP 2.5 has quickly soured.

First the good news is that everything seems to work just fine on my Mac running Leopard 10.5.2. In particular, the Gallery and Media Library functions all seem to work just fine. On my Mac I’ve tested in Firefox, Safari with no problem.

My PC is not having as good of an experience.

On my PC running XPsp2, the Gallery and Media Library functions mostly do not work. I do not get any errors of any sort, it just doesn’t work right. It does not work in IE6, IE7, Firefox 2.0.0.13 or Safari 3.1. And it’s not just my computer that it is not working on either…my client was unable to perform the following actions in the same way that I was unable to.

If I upload an image, I am able to do so. But I a unable to do much of anything else. When I click on the Gallery tab, the new lightbox window opens up and I see the thumbnail of the image I just uploaded. But if I click on “show” the tiny thumbnail disappears and the “show” text changes to “hide”, while everything else remains the same. The window does not drop down further, like it does on my Mac, to display “title”, “caption”, “description”, “Link URL”, “Alignment”, or “Size”. Another problem is that clicking the close “x” does not close the window. I have to use the back button on my browser to get out of the Gallery, Media Library or “Choose File” window.

Clicking on the Media Library opens up the lighbox window as well. But again, clicking on an image to show it does not work nor am I able to close out of the window.

I have read the sticky on this several times and since it works on my Macs, I do not really see how this pertains to my situation. Nevertheless, I went through and made sure the browser caches on my PC browsers were all cleared. I downloaded and reinstalled the latest version of Flash. I tried the .htaccess thing to diasable mod_security from being an issue, I have no plugins active at all and don’t have bad behavior installed at all. I even went as far as deleting and reinstalling the wp-admin and wp-includes directories. No difference. Still doesn’t work.

So after it’s all said and done, 2.5 does not appear to be ready for prime time and since I’ve just spent 15 hours building a new client site on it, I’m not a happy camper right now nor is my client.

So anyone else have any ideas besides what’s in the sitcky (which did not fix anything for me)

Let me reiterate that none of these problems exist on my Mac…only my PC ( and also on my client’s PC)

  • Hi cnymike, thanks for sharing your detailed experiences. First of all, if your blog works flawlessly with your Mac OSX, you can be pretty shure that you sucessfully installed it.

I had several Issues with the new Mediaupload/Library as well. At least with Firefox and a Firefox Extension called Firebug I was able to find out that the javascript inside the page threw some errors. I was testing some functionality to help another user in the forums. Nevertheless, I got strange faulty behaviors compareable to yours. I tried this and that, even disabled cache completeley with the Web Developers Toolbar Extension.

What to say? The next day after a reboot everything went fine! Can you believe that? This was the most wired caching / javscript problem I was facing so far.

Hmmm, well I have good news. I discovered the issue was my Computer Associates Firewall was to blame. Apparently the AJAX thing in Gallery is considered an ad or pop-up window or something because when I added my URL to the exclusion list of my firewall, the Gallery started operating normally on the PC.

So folks, if you are experiencing this funkiness in Gallery and Media Library, make sure you check that your Firewall isn’t blocking something

Good to read an quite interesting to see that desktop firewalls these days tend to filter more and more stuff.
